Frequently Asked Questions About Sauna Hus

These FAQs cover location, sauna use, safety, and practical details to help you decide if Sauna Hus is right for you.

Where is Sauna Hus located?

Sauna Hus is based at The Cyder Farm Campsite, beside a lake in Ilketshall St Andrew, Suffolk, between Bungay and Halesworth, with easy reach from places on the coast like Lowestoft and Dunwich and further inland from Norwich.
Although located in Suffolk, the sauna sits close to the Norfolk / Suffolk border and is regularly used by visitors travelling from both counties.

Is Sauna Hus an indoor or outdoor sauna?

Sauna Hus is a fully outdoor, wood-fired sauna.
The sauna is a fully converted vintage horsebox. It sits beside a lake, surrounded by open countryside rather than roads, promenades, or coastal footpaths. Cooling down happens outdoors, using fresh air, the lake, or cold water facilities. Have a look at the build

What should I bring to a sauna session?

For most sessions, you’ll need:
A towel to sit on
Swimwear (unless attending a private session)
Footwear for outdoor use
Drinking water (plastic bottles only)
We recommend avoiding glass or metal bottles, as these can become hot.

Is nudity allowed?

Nudity is permitted only during private sauna sessions, and inside the sauna cabin only.
For shared or public sessions, appropriate swimwear must be worn.
Clothing must always be worn outside the sauna, including seating areas, walkways, and changing areas.
Full details are available on our Sauna Etiquette page.

I’ve never used a sauna before. Is that OK?

Yes. Many people visit Sauna Hus for their first sauna experience.
There is no target time to aim for. Most first-time users start with 5–10 minutes, then cool down and see how they feel.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable, light-headed, or unwell, leave the sauna immediately and cool down.
→ Read more on our First Time Sauna page.

How hot does the sauna get?

The sauna is heated gradually using a traditional wood-fired stove.
Temperature varies depending on weather, airflow, and session timing. Heat is intended to feel steady and manageable, not rushed or overwhelming.
Steam (löyly) can be created by adding small amounts of water to the hot stones.

What is Löyly?

Löyly, pronounced Lur-Loo, is the steam created when water is poured onto hot sauna stones.
It causes a brief rise in heat and movement of air, then fades again. Löyly is used carefully and in small amounts.

Can I cool down in the lake?

Yes. Cooling down is encouraged, but it should always be done safely.
You may:
Cool down in the lake (within the designated swimming area)
Use the outdoor shower
Use the cold water dunk tank
f you use the cold water dunk tank, please do not enter the lake afterwards, as the tank contains chlorine.

Is the lake safe to enter?

The lake has a clay bottom, which can feel slippery underfoot.
We recommend wearing neoprene beach shoes or boots when entering the water.
The lake is also home to carp. They’re not interested in sauna users, but they do occasionally drift past, which can be… memorable.

Can children use the sauna?

Children may attend only when stated at booking and must be supervised at all times.
Children under five years old cannot regulate body temperature effectively and should not use the sauna.
Shorter sessions and lower heat are advised for older children.
→ Full details are available on our Children & Sauna Use page

Is sauna use safe?

Sauna bathing involves exposure to high heat and outdoor conditions.
You should not use the sauna if you are:
Pregnant
Experiencing heart or circulatory conditions
Unwell or feverish
Under the influence of alcohol or drugs

How long are sessions?

Sessions run 1 hour each (unless otherwise stated) and times vary by season and daylight.
Private sessions are available.
Clear start and finish times help keep the sauna calm, unhurried, and safe for everyone.
