Your sauna session: what to expect

A Sauna Hus session is designed to be simple, calm, and unhurried. Whether itโ€™s your first time using a sauna or part of a regular routine, the focus is on helping you settle in, slow down, and enjoy the heat in a relaxed lakeside setting.

Knowing what to expect at a sauna helps many people relax into the experience and take things at their own pace.

Cyder Farm is located on the main road between Bungay and Halesworth. Please drive into the campsite entrance, where youโ€™ll see the original farm buildings on the left-hand side.

From here, park up and walk down towards the lake. One of our staff members will meet you at the Sauna Hus, show you where to leave your belongings, and talk you through the session before you begin.

Your session starts on the hour of your booking and finishes on the hour. This helps keep things fair and relaxed for everyone, as there may be guests booked in after you.

We recommend arriving a few minutes early so youโ€™re ready to begin on time and donโ€™t feel rushed.

We ask that you arrive freshly showered or use the cold-water shower on site before entering the sauna.

Entering the sauna with clean, wet skin helps the heat work more effectively. Water on the skin improves heat transfer, allows you to warm up more evenly, and helps prevent the skin from drying out too quickly. It also keeps the sauna environment clean and comfortable for everyone.

Please hang robes or clothing on the hooks on the side of the sauna and take a moment to dip your feet before entering. This helps your body adjust more comfortably to the change in temperature.

Please bring:

  • One towel to sit on inside the sauna
  • One towel for drying off between sauna rounds
  • A water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Wet shoes or boots if you plan to dip in the lake

Sitting on a towel keeps the benches clean and is standard sauna etiquette. Staying hydrated and wearing suitable footwear when entering the lake helps keep the experience comfortable and safe.

We recommend using a sauna hat during your session. Sauna hats help protect your head from excessive heat, reduce dizziness, and allow you to stay comfortable in the sauna for longer.

Sauna hats can be purchased when booking your session online for collection at the Sauna Hus. They are reusable and can also be purchased on site, subject to availability.

The sauna will be hot and ready for you when your session begins. Youโ€™re free to enjoy the sauna at your own pace, taking breaks to cool down whenever you feel the need.

Inside the sauna youโ€™ll find a small selection of essential oils. If youโ€™d like to use them, choose one and add three to four drops to the sauna bucket before pouring water onto the stones. A small amount goes a long way and helps keep the atmosphere comfortable for everyone.

Cooling down is an important part of the sauna cycle. Cold water immersion is optional, and thereโ€™s no expectation to stay in for any length of time. Even a brief dip, a cool shower, or simply sitting outside by the lake can be enough.

Listen to your body and move through sauna rounds in a way that feels right for you.

If itโ€™s your first time using a sauna, thereโ€™s no need to worry. Staff manage the stove, guide the session, and are always available to answer questions.

Sauna isnโ€™t about endurance or pushing limits. Short, comfortable sauna rounds followed by cooling down are often the most enjoyable way to experience it.

Sauna Hus follows established sauna practices and guidance used across the UK, including those promoted by the British Sauna Society.
